How To Calculate Materials For 10 Inches Thick Brick Walls

how to calculate materials in 10 inches brick walls

This post will show you how to calculate the materials needed to build 10 inches thick brick walls.

In residential buildings, outer brick walls are normally made 10” thick.

And, inner brick walls are often 5” thick.

I’ve discussed how to calculate materials for 5” thick brick walls before.

So, it’s time to learn calculating materials for 10” thick brick walls.

Let’s first see…

How To Calculate Quantity Of Brickwork In A 10” Thick Wall?

Let’s say, we have a wall like an image below:

Example of a brick wall

To calculate the brickwork quantity:

First, Get The Area Of The Wall

The formula is,

= Length × Height

= 12’-4” × 10’-0”

= 123.33 square feet.

Next, Calculate The Area Of The Opening.

The formula is,

= Length of the opening × Height of the opening

= 3’-4” × 7’-0”

= 23.33 square feet.

Now, Get The Quantity Of The Brickwork.

The formula is,

= Area of the wall — Area of the opening

= 123.33 — 23.33

= 100 square feet.

What Materials Are Needed For 10” Thick Brick Wall?

Brick and cement-mortar are the main ingredients of brick walls.

Cement-mortar is prepared by mixing sand and cement at 1:4 or 1:6 ratio depending on the construction manual.

Premixed Cement-mortar can also be bought from the market.

How To Calculate Bricks In 10” Brick Walls?

For that:

First, Get The Volume Of 10” Brickwork

The formula is,

= Area of the brickwork × Thickness of the wall

= 100 × 9½”

= 79 cubic feet. (9½” = 0.79 feet)

[Note: The thickness of 10” brick walls is actually 9½”.]

Actual thickness of a 10" brick wall

Next, Calculate The Volume Of A Brick (including mortar).

The standard size of a brick is 9½″×4½″×2¾″.

But, in 10” brick wall, the size of brick including mortar is 9¾″×4¾″×3¼″.

The size of brick including mortar in 10" thick brick wall

So, the volume is,

= 9¾″×4¾″×3¼″

= 150.51 cubic inches

Or, 0.087 cubic feet.

Now, Calculate The Required Number Of Bricks.

The formula is,

= Volume of the brickwork ÷ Volume of a brick (including mortar)

= 79 ÷ 0.087

= 908 Nos.

How To Calculate The Quantity Of Mortar For 10” Brick Wall?

For calculating mortar quantity:

First, Calculate The Volume Of A Brick.

Standard Size of a brick

= 9½″ × 4½″ × 2¾″

= 117.56 cubic inches.

Or, 0.068 cubic feet.

Next, Calculate The Total Volume Of The Required Number Of Bricks.

The formula is,

= Required number of bricks × Volume of a brick

= 908 × 0.068

= 61.74 cubic feet.

Now, Calculate The Required Volume Of Mortar.

The formula is,

= Volume of brickwork — Volume of the required number of bricks

= 79 — 61.74

= 17.26 cubic feet.

How To Calculate Required Cement Quantity?

To calculate the required cement quantity:

First, Calculate The Dry Volume Of Mortar.

The required mortar volume for our brickwork is 17.26 cubic feet (We calculated this above).

But that is the wet volume of mortar.

The dry volume is,

= 17.26 × 1.33

= 22.95 cubic feet.

Next, Calculate The Volume Of Cement In The Mortar

The formula is,

= (Dry volume of mortar ÷ Sum of ratio) × Cement ratio

= (22.95 ÷ 5) × 1

[Note: Let’s say we’ll use 1:4 cement-sand ratio to prepare mortar]

= 4.59 cubic feet.

Now, Convert Cement Volume Into Bags.

The formula is,

= Volume of required cement ÷ Volume of one bag cement.

= 4.75 ÷ 1.25 (1 bag cement = 1.25 cubic feet)

= 3.80 bags.

How To Calculate Required Sand Quantity?

The formula for calculating sand quantity is,

= (Dry volume of mortar ÷ Sum of ratio) × Sand ratio

= (22.95 ÷ 5) × 4

= 18.36 cubic feet

Summary:

So, Required materials for 100 square feet 10” thick brickworks:

  • Bricks = 908 nos
  • Cement = 3.8 bags
  • Sand = 18.36 cubic feet

Adding 10% wastage:

  • Bricks = 1000 nos
  • Cement = 4 bags
  • Sand = 20 cubic feet

[Note: Round figure is taken]

That’s it.

A Quick Tip For Calculating Materials For 10” thick Brickwork

Now I’ll show you a quick tip. Applying this, you can calculate the required materials for any quantity of brickwork within minutes.

As we now know from the above calculation, for 100 square feet of brickwork, the required materials are:

  • Bricks = 1000 nos
  • Cement = 4 bags
  • Sand = 20 cubic feet

So, for one square feet brickwork:

  • Bricks = 1000 ÷ 100 = 10 nos
  • Cement = 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04 bags
  • Sand = 20 ÷ 100 = 0.20 cubic feet

Now you can calculate materials for any quantity of 10” thick brickwork.

Let’s say, you need to calculate materials for 500 square feet of brickwork.

For that:

  • Bricks = 10 nos × 500 = 5000 nos
  • Cement = 0.04 bags × 500 = 20 bags
  • Sand = 0.20 cubic feet × 500 = 100 cubic feet

So, the quick formula is,

= Required material per square feet × Quantity of brickwork

Conclusion

In the above calculation, I use 1:4 cement-sand ratio for the mortar.

If you use a different cement-sand ratio, the required quantity of cement and sand will be different.

But don’t worry.

Just follow the calculation procedure I outlined in this post.

And you’re good to go!
